My asawa wants to learn to drive

My wife has been wanting to learn how to drive so she can run her errands and give me a break but I'm worried. My wife has been in the united states for just about 3 years now and she's finally getting used to life here but i worry because where she comes from, the normal transportation is bicycle or jeepney or 2 legs. The thing I'm worried about is my wife getting into an accident and i get a call at work telling me to come to the hospital. I don't know about other husbands who have married filipina's but i sure would like to get their opinion on this. Maybe they had a similar dilemma, i don't know. It's kind of nerve racking to me because California drivers are not the most courteous or best drivers in the world. And my wife doesn't have any experience at all driving a car except from when we go out, sometimes i let her grab the steering wheel and steer straight ahead while we are going down the street but i usually have one hand on the wheel. I'm really nervous and i need some feedback on this. Should i be so concerned and is this normal feeling? Has any other husband of a filipina wife gone thru this kind of problem? Please let me here from you. Thanks...

Hehhe its normal to learn how to drive. My hubby really wants me to learn to drive because I am also more than 3 yrs here in America. I learn a little bit but still I am shaking when i drive on the highway. Its good for her to learn in case of emergency she can drive. Anyway I have something a tag for you in my blog thanks....http://love.mommyko.com/2008/12/shot-on-spot.html

hi michael =)

if she wants to learn, don't hesitate to teach her. I am sure she'll learn fast. have you seen the traffic here in manila? my sister has driven both in california and manila and she said the traffic and drivers here are worse!

Hey, when 16 year-olds learn to drive, wherever they are, whatever race or gender, they also have had no experience!

It's mildly racist to ground your worry in her being Filipino. If your wife wants to learn how to drive of course she can take lessons and get her licence like everyone else. I do not see why you would need to consult other men on that option? (Of course you're free to worry, but it sounds like you would try to persuade her not to do it... that doesn't seem right.)

I think she should get her own lessons, too, I don't think you should be her "teacher"....

if you wife have the really courage to drive... why not? I am a Filipina living in Europe (almost 1 year) ,,, but I was just so lucky that I am use in "Manila driving" ... so my husband is not worried.... I am a good driver... lol!

My husband was terribly worried when I started learning how to drive. Thankfully my father in law was nice to enough to teach me how. He has always been the one who pushes me all the time and I am so thankful for that. Just like with driving and going back to school in case something happens to my husband so I have something to do. Anyways, I never had any experience with driving before and in time with practice she will get better. I hate the feeling of being stuck in the house and had to wait for him so after 6 months that I got here, I got my license. It is more convenient too with having a baby because I can take my son to the doctor rather than waiting for my husband. Although when we go places I let him drive, I seldom drive with him and I am good with that.

My Dad is coming over from the Philippines and the first thing that we will do is let him take the written exam so he can take the road test. My husband said, my father might have a hard time adjusting with the drivers here and all I said is, you have to be a defensive driver to be able to drive in the Philippines. Drivers here in IL are nothing. As long as she doesn't have to venture the expressway she should be fine. I have only driven there twice.

So good luck to both of you and learning how to drive will be good for her and for you.
