Another windows computer heads south

It's too bad they cant make a computer that will never break down, never be outdated, never crash or give error messages and never slow down. Yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen in this life time. I got a call from my wife last week while I was at work telling me she has bad news. I can only imagine what it was. Apparently, the desktop computer she uses got an error message saying "fan failure". Urgghhhh. Not again. We had issues with this in the past and since it was under warranty, we took it to the shop for them to repair but they didn't do too well so I had to take matters into my own hands this time. I'm a firm believer in that old quote "If you want something done right the first time, do it yourself". I replaced the CPU fan and added new heat sink grease to the new fan. It ran quieter and better for a month or two before she started having problems with it again recently. I'm assuming the motherboard was heading south because its about 6 years old and has been having other issues with speed and performance even after I tuned it up, scanned it for malware, viruses, and some other checks. I knew this day was coming soon. The 22" flat panel monitor we bought lasted about 3 years and we were using an older flat panel monitor from my mom's computer. So we had to break down and buy a new computer. I decided to go with my gut feelings and purchase an Imac computer even though I had no idea how to use one. A few days later after using it, I find myself constantly searching on the web about how to do this or how to do that, frequently visiting the apple support page for help. They say that when you get to learn how to use an Imac, you won't ever want to go back to a windows based pc. Right now I have to disagree with that expression since my wife and I are both struggling just to learn how to perform basic functions but maybe that answer will change once I get to learn how apple likes to run the show. And that doesn't include the fact that I'm also trying to transfer all the documents like word, excel, photos and other important documents from the windows based computer to the Imac. This in itself has become a quite a chore. This new computer could be better or could be worse, but only time will tell. Do you own a windows or apple computer? What do you is better? Your thoughts or opinions are always welcome.

We have macs and windows at home and I'm using a macbook with windows OS :D Like you I still haven't been so comfortable with mac navigation but I learned...

Well, having a faster PC means your using more energy and using more energy means more heat...therefore the more heat your pc gets the faster it goes kapputt. ^_^ You have a fan, yes, it lowers the CPU's temperature, however, dust can be brought in via the fan. When there's much dust, no wind comes in, does the heat up. It is therefore vital to dust off the cpu and fan once in a while...That's the end of my novel... :)

I can relate to this frustrating computer break-down thingy though my computer in not Apple :) There are repairmen who don't do their job well, wait until warranty is over so they can start collecting repair payment. It happened to me seriously with the CPU i just bought last year.

I know, if only there's a computer that won't crash or need no updating at all :-) But it's impossible as these software or computer giants want more profits for their business.

Love apple and I wish to have one someday :-)

i like your statement, "a computer that will never break down, never be outdated, never crash or give error messages and never slow down."

i am that kind of person. it's like if I buy it, it should be a good investment and last me a lifetime. but things aren't that way.

maybe that is why i like jewelry more--they don't conk out with use! LOL

A computer breakdown can give regular computer users a breakdown as well especially if it is used for work.

I just replaced our old desktop computer recently. It has been awhile since the last time I used it. I thought the CPU is broken or forever done but luckily, it just needs a wire replacement. I am using it right now and hopefully it will work for a long time. BTW, this desktop computer is ten years old.
