Online vehicle registration: Is it faster online or in-person?

This morning I had to get our 2007 Toyota sienna van smog checked for the first time ever. I was praying it would go thru the state smog check program without a hitch but first I had to go shopping around for the cheap price for the test since I don't have a lot of money.  Most shops that I inquired to wanted $70.00 for the test but thankfully I had my smart phone and inquired online thru yelp and found one shop only a few miles from where I live that could do it for $50.00. My prayers where answered. I left my keys at the shop and walked to 7-eleven and when I came back, it was about 5 minutes more and they called me in the office to tell me they were done and our van passed. I inquired about the specific gas measurements that was taken from our vans tailpipe and they showed that the van was running very clean. I was happy so I paid them and went home to go online and renew our registration. That's when I hit a snag because even though the smog test results was sent electronically to the department of motor vehicles in Sacramento, California, it wasn't registering with the online DMV renewal service on their website. Nothing can be simple these days even with all the electronic technology we have. I was still able to pay the proper fee's but had to wait until their records were updated before they received my online request which according to them will take about 2 weeks before I'll get my new sticker. So much for online renewal service. Faster than going to the DMV in person? Yes, but it has it's problems. Oh well, one less thing I have to do.

Well, the thing about doing it online is you don't have to go and drive to their office and fall in line and wait, I guess. So sorry about the snag mommy. There's always going to be some problems when taking care of things, it seems like. Good thing it passed.

My husband always register his vehicle in the DMV office. He has to make sure that he goes in the middle of the week to avoid people :-) He did not try it online yet :-)

This sounds like a really great idea. It's convenient too. To top it all you only spent less than expected. My husband do it on the mail though and sometimes he goes to DMV to renew

It is good thing that you guys can renew ur vehicle register there through online but still, i think it is much better or faster to do it in person. as for us here, that's all we can do.

i'd still say it's more convenient to do it online, just think of all the trouble of going there in person, right? although it would be most ideal if they can expedite their process, the online way of applying for stuff is the fastest and stress-free way to go about it!

I do not have any idea about online registration. But just like you, my family in States also own a Sienna and I do not know how they register. I will ask them about it.

I think the process is just the same. My husband goes to the DMV office for that.
